Backups, restores, clones and migrations can take minutes. When you start one in Aprox, you do not have to keep the app open to know how it is going. On iPhone, Aprox shows a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. On Android, it shows a progress notification. Either way, it tells you how the task ended.

Where to find it

The progress display starts by itself when you start one of these operations in Aprox:

Operation Shown as
Back up now "Backing up <guest>"
Restore a backup "Restoring <guest>"
Clone a guest "Cloning <guest>"
Migrate a guest "Migrating <guest>"
Destroy a guest "Destroying <guest>"

You turn it on or off in Settings:

  • iPhone: Sidebar › Settings › Follow long tasks on the Lock Screen.
  • Android: Sidebar › Settings › Follow long tasks in a notification.

Both are on by default.

Follow a task on iPhone

  1. Start one of the operations above, for example Back Up Now… on plex.
  2. Lock your iPhone or switch to another app.
  3. The Live Activity shows:
    • the operation and guest, for example "Backing up plex";
    • the server and node, for example "Homelab (Demo) · pve1";
    • a progress bar and the percentage.
  4. When the task ends, the Live Activity reads Finished. or Failed.

The progress bar stays indeterminate, without a number, until Proxmox reports a percentage in the task log.

If Aprox has not heard from the cluster for a while, for example because the iPhone lost its connection, the Live Activity says "Aprox has not heard from the cluster recently."

Follow a task on Android

  1. Start one of the operations above.
  2. A notification in the Task progress channel appears and shows Running… and then the percentage, for example "17%".
  3. When the task ends, the notification reads Finished., or Failed: followed by what went wrong.

Aprox stops following a task in the notification after 20 minutes. The task itself keeps running; you can follow it in the Tasks tab.

While Aprox is running, Android also shows a progress notification for any cluster task that runs for 20 seconds or longer, including tasks started elsewhere.

Turn it off

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Turn off Follow long tasks on the Lock Screen (iPhone) or Follow long tasks in a notification (Android).

In the app's words: "Turn this off and long tasks still run — you just watch them in the Tasks tab instead."

Good to know

  • Following tasks is free. Starting a backup, restore, clone, migration or destroy needs Aprox Pro.
  • This is feedback on something you started, not an alert. To hear about problems you did not cause, use Alerts and notifications.
  • The Mac has no Live Activities. Follow tasks in the Tasks tab or in Tasks and logs.
  • On Android, progress notifications need notification permission for Aprox.
  • The same running tasks, with progress, also appear on the Watch app.
