The node shell gives you a terminal on the node itself, the same shell you get from the Shell button in the Proxmox web UI. Use it for anything Aprox deliberately leaves to the command line, such as installing updates with apt full-upgrade, checking logs with journalctl, or running pveam update. The node shell is part of Aprox Pro and needs a password login.

Where to find it

  • iPhone, iPad, Android: Sidebar › pve1 › Console tab.
  • Mac: select the node, then click Open Console in the toolbar (⇧⌘K), or right-click the node in the sidebar › Open Console. The shell opens in its own window.

On the free plan the Console tab shows a lock and the placeholder Unlock with Aprox Pro. Tap it to see what Aprox Pro includes.

Open the shell

iPhone, iPad and Android

  1. Open the node, for example pve1.
  2. Tap the Console tab. Aprox signs the shell in with your session and shows Connecting… until it is ready.
  3. Type your commands. A hardware keyboard works, or use the on-screen keyboard.
  4. Optional: tap Full Screen (Android: Full screen) for more room. While the full-screen view is open, the tab itself shows Console paused. Close full screen (Android: Exit full screen) to continue in the tab.

Mac

  1. Select the node in the sidebar.
  2. Press ⇧⌘K, or click Open Console in the toolbar, or right-click the node › Open Console.
  3. The shell opens in a separate, resizable window that can also go full screen. Each console window is listed in the Window menu. Opening the console for the same node again brings its existing window to the front.

Which console type it uses

A node shell always uses xterm.js, Proxmox's HTML5 terminal, whatever you chose under Settings › Graphical Console or Serial Console. Those settings apply to virtual machines and containers. For the different console types, see Console.

Requirements on the server

  • Password login. Proxmox does not accept API tokens for console connections. On a server that signs in with an API token, the tab shows Console needs a password login: "Proxmox does not accept API tokens for console connections. Switch this server to username and password authentication to use the console." See Sign-in methods and two-factor.
  • Privilege. Your account needs shell access to the node, typically the Sys.Console privilege on the node.
  • A signed-in server. If the server is not signed in, the tab shows Not signed in. Sign in from the sidebar first.

Good to know

  • Same shell as the web UI. Proxmox handles the shell session itself, so what you get depends on the account you signed in with, exactly as with the Shell button in the Proxmox web UI.
  • Not in the demo. The demo cluster has no Console tab.
  • Trusted certificate. If the console stays blank or reports Console could not be opened, tap Try Again, and make sure the server's certificate is trusted in Aprox rather than skipped. See Self-signed certificates and Troubleshooting.
